Big Break VI Winner, Briana Vega... Interview

Lots of good golf shots, lots of competitive fire, and lots of drama... to say the least!  After months of battling, we're finally down to the last two competitors.  These women will duke it out in an eighteen hole match play competition tonight, and a Big Break Ka'anapali Champion will finally be crowned!

No pressure right?  Hmmm.... thousands watching, LPGA exemption on the line, BMW on the line, endorsement deals on the line... or nothing!   How are Sophie & Kim going to be feeling going into the final match, and what are they going to do to control their emotions and handle the pressure they're under?

Big Break VI Champion, Briana Vega, was nice enough to answer a few question for me, to give us some sense of what Sophi & Kim will be going through tonight in the final match:

 - How did you feel going into the finals of Big Break VI... did you have a particular game plan heading into the final match?
I felt really confident going into the final match!  I was actually less nervous going into the finals than I was going into any of the other challenges.  My game plan was mainly just to have fun.  I had worked so hard to get to this point, and I really just wanted to enjoy the experience.

- How did you handle the pressure throughout the day of your final match?
There was a lot of pressure in the final match, a lot was on the line, and I really wanted to take advantage of this career changing oppourtunity.  But I just kept reminding myself how hard I worked to get here, and to just stay confident.  Like I said, I was less nervous about the final than all the other challenges... but I was still a bit anxious.

 - Was the pressure similar to what you have experienced in some of your other big golf events... for example, when you competed in the 2004 United States Women's Open Championship?
The pressure of The Big Break overall is harder than any tournament I've played in, including the US Open.  Before the show I had never been as nervous as I was, even at the Open.  My nerves hit a whole new level!

- What was the most valuable lesson you took from your Big Break experiences, and what has winning The Big Break done for your career?
Winning the show opened a lot of doors for me, and I got the jump start I needed.  However, more importantly, I found a new sense of confidents and accomplishment!

- What advice would you offer up to Kim & Sophie heading into their final match?
The advice I would give Kim and Sophie would be to have fun and enjoy the moment.  You are two of the few people who get to experience this pressure, and you should both be proud of what you have done so far!  And play your own game!

Since winning Big Break VI, Briana has shown steady improvement in her game year after year.  I see big things from this competitor, having seen her play first hand.  I'm confident that in time she will do big things, and be one of the many Big Breakers that will make The Golf Channel proud!
