How to play your best...THE REAL WAY!
You know... as a certified TPI professional, one of our beliefs is... "We do not believe there is one way to swing a golf club, in fact we believe that there is an infinite number of ways to swing a club. but we do believe there is an effecient way to swing a club and it is based off what the body can do."
I mention this because I have recently been asked by numerous people questions and issues about their swings.
Here's the deal. After years of testing clients in order to create flexibility and conditioning programs and seeing their positive affects on their game; from almost 15,000 amatuer and 1400 tour pros being tested at TPI...the conclusion is...your body affects your swing more than anything else that will prevent your from the success you desire!
So PLEASE, don't just listen to your golf instructor as the ONLY professional that you take advice from to create and perfect your game!
Please know that your body issues will negatively affect your game if you don't address them! Consider a team approach!
Ok, this isn't just about Golf, regardless, you should have a great chiropracter, a great massage therapist, a great golf fitness coach, a great PGA qualified golf instructor and great equipment.
Together this team will not only help you be the best athlete you can be, but the best golfer you can be! Afterall it is the exact team that TPI recommends and it is the same one that I use for my PGA tour winners!

Charles Barkley's swing- Is Haney doint the best thing for him?
I recently watched an episode from Haney Project: Charles Barkley and was unimpressed. No not with the show, I think it is great. But with the process of how Charles is going to fix his swing. After the first meeting Charles was told that he was going to have to do a "Tiger Day." A "Tiger Day" involves getting up early and hitting thousands of golf balls with breaks to work out and eat. I understand how this works for refining a swing like Tigers (and you'll understand by the end of this) but it pretty much ignores all modern motor learning research. I am by no means an expert, but if you hang around experts you will pick up a few of these key points.
Let me explain what could (or should) have been done with Mr. Barkley. There are different neurotransmitters in the brain that relate to motor motor patters. One of these is used for "automatic"tasks: Tying your shoes, blinking, and cursing at the ball going out of bounds are all examples of automatic responses fueled by one form of transmitter. A second neurotransmitter is used when learning a new skill that actively involves short term memory. When Tiger is hitting thousands of golf balls, he is doing so with the power of one neurotransmitter. When Charles Barkley is concentrating on making swing changes, he is using the power of acetylcholine, the short term memory and learning jet fuel we have in our brain.
Ok, enough of the nerdy stuff, here is what this means.
Charles Barkley (and you) only have enough energy for a small amount of focused effort when learning a new pattern and using acetylcholine. It is actually better, for longevity of the patter, to hit 50 balls with focus over more days than it is to hit large amounts of golf balls in a single session. Tiger day is good for Tiger, but is it good for Barkley? I don't think so; at least not in the long run. It does make good TV though to see a thousand golf balls teed up and a nearly defeated staring them down the way he did Hakeem "the dream" back in his day. But don't for a second believe that it is the best way to LEARN a new pattern the way Charles is doing it.
On to my second gripe. Where is the physical assessment???
Charles is going to do boxing to get in golf shape? And Hank Haney is going to allow this? How does that help Charles stop that transition move of diving his head down 2 feet where he looks like he is inspecting the golf ball, like a two year old looking at a lady bug? Well at least he'll be in a good position to give an upper cut to the golf ball after that move. Hey, a good offense is the best defense, right? I read an article on ESPN before the show aired and in it the interviewer stated, "But Barkley's self-taught swing started to deteriorate as he lost flexibility from the series of back and leg injuries that eventually forced him to retire from the NBA in 2000." Was I the only one that thought, hey if lost flexibility was how his swing went bad, maybe some increased flexibility would help fix it. Maybe Charles could try a little yoga or some other form of golf flexibility would help him have a chance of bringing the club down on plane. Or maybe he could hit 8 hours of golf balls and make golf improvement seem like a full time job. I hope that Charles doesn't scare off golfers from making potential changes, because it's really not as hard as he is making it seem .

What do you drive?
So what do you drive?
Is it nice? Is it powerful? Is it attractive? Do you like to drive it or do you not look forward to it?
Can it do fun things for you like camp, drive fast, or outperform the next guy?
Now, if you answered any of those questions, take those same answers and apply them to your body!
Is your body....
Nice? Is it powerful? Is it attractive? Do you like to drive it or do you not look forward to it?
Can it do fun things for you like camp, drive fast, or outperform the next guy?
In other words...does your body perform the way you want it to? Or do you struggle with pain, inflexibility, lack of strength, or fatigue? So in other words, it seems as if you are driving a beat up ol' jalopy?
If so, is it any wonder that your golf game might resemble the same thing? Stop being and "driving" around in a beat up ol' jalopy, and trade up to a new sportscar!
All you have to do is make an appointment with yourself everyday to exercise. Period! And before you know it, you will emerge as the "car" you want to be and it will perform the way you want to drive it!

The Freak of golf fitness returns!
Yeah! The king of golf fitness returns!
This is a good weekend for us golf fitness professionals because the guy who started the whole "golf fitness" craze, is back! The poster boy of golf fitness performance has been out with a major surgery to his lead leg (left) knee for the last year.
This weekend the entire world will see what a strong golf fitness and performance program will do to your game if you work at it. But here is what you need to remember, you can experience not just an improvement in your game, but and improvement in your life as well! A solid golf fitness program designed by a professional, will by nature, improve your body's abiltiy to function better, and a better functioning body will perform not just more optimally at golf, but in every other aspect of life as well.
Enjoy watching the fruit of Tiger's labor this weekend, and keep in mind you can do it too!

Want to hit it further this year?
Like everyone, I'm sure you have a goal (like you do every year!) to hit it 10-30 yds further this year. Am I right?
If I am right, then what are you doing about it? Hopefully you aren't like most men, in particular, and expect to go out after purchasing a new driver, and have that be the solution to your lack of distance!
Now, I'm not saying that technology can't help you there, but in the end, it's the thing that swings the peice of technology that will make the biggest difference of all...your body!
If I told you that I could get you to hit it as far as Tiger, what would you say?
Would you answer, "but I can't because he is more flexible, stronger, and more coordinated then me." And then I would say, "exactly!"
And that is my point. You must work on your flexiblity, stability, mobility, strength and power in order to live up to your true "golfing " potential, otherwise you will never be as good as you want or think you can be, period! Now the cool thing about working on your "golf fitness" is that anything you do to improve your game, will improve all other aspects of your life as well, which is why I say "Golf Fitness is LIfe Fitness©"
So if you really want to change your game in 2009, get out and find a qualified golf fitness professional who is TPI (Titleist Performance Institute, www.mytpi.com) certified!
Make sure to check out our "Golf fitness starter Kit" at www.golffitnessguys.com for a f.r.e.e. conditioning program that can give you 30 Yards in 30 Days!
